Star dares Sabah CM to debate on 'colonialism'

KOTA KINABALU:  Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman has stirred a hornet's nest by his statement in the local media on Tues on "the Opposition lying about the state being colonised by the Malaya-run Federal Government".
The State Reform Party (Star), for one, wants Musa to prove his allegations of the Opposition lying instead of "hiding beyond vague, sweeping and meaningless statements".
The state cabinet holding meetings, the state government co-operating with the Federal Government or being pawned off with announcements of measly fund allocations by the latter "does not mask the reality that Sabah has been colonised", according to Star in a prepared press statement. "The evidence of internal colonization is all around us."
"We challenge him to a public debate on the topic: Is Sabah still a colony?" said Star deputy chairman Daniel John Jambun. "Demokrasi Sabah (Desah) the NGO can make the arrangements."
Star, added Daniel, has all the facts, statistics and figures to prove that Sabah has been internally colonised by Putrajaya since 16 Sept 1963 when Malaysia was formed.
The Star deputy chief, continuing, alleged that it was “the mother of all lies” to say that Sabah became independent through Malaysia. Sabah, he pointed out, became independent on 31 Aug 1963 "before it was swallowed up by Malaya 16 days later under false pretences".
"We thought that we had helped formed a new Federation, Malaysia, where Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore and Malaya would be equal partners," said Daniel. "Instead, we came out from the tiger's mouth (Britain) and landed in the crocodile's mouth (Malaya)."
He claimed that Singapore was kicked out from Malaysia in 1965, two years later, when the island resisted attempts by Kuala Lumpur to re-colonize it in the wake of the British departure. Brunei, according to him, had deep suspicions about Malayan leaders and stayed out from the Federation at the 11th hour.
Asked whether Star a “smoking gun” on its allegations, Daniel replied that the party is being guided by international law and the interpretation of the United Nations Security Council on what constitutes "internal colonization".
He cited South Sudan, which became independent in July last year, as a classic study on "internal colonization".
"The UN found that South Sudan, where the people are mostly Christians and Blacks, had been internally colonised by the Muslim Arab government in Khartoum in the north," said Daniel. "The UN Security Council approved the partition of the country and the independence of South Sudan."
Citing facts, figures and statistics, Daniel claims that the proof of internal colonization is based, among others, on the declaration of the World Bank at the end of 2010 in Kota Kinabalu that the state was the poorest in Malaysia. There are parallels here with the story of oil-rich, dirt-poor South Sudan, he said.
In short, Star attributes the grinding poverty of Sabah -- Sarawak as well -- to the internal colonization of these two states in Borneo by the Malaya-run Federal Government in Putrajaya.
Malaysia, fumed the Star deputy chief, is a bad British idea initially meant to protect their commercial interest in their former colonies.
Malaysia, for Sabah and Sarawak subsequently meant exchanging British colonialism for Malayan colonization. Brunei, he reiterated, saw through the Malaysia scam and stayed out of the Federation at the 11th hour. “Singapore was trapped just like Sabah and Sarawak but managed to escape in 1965”.
“Look where Brunei and Singapore are today compared with Sabah and Sarawak,” said Daniel. “The S'pore/Brunei currency is worth RM 2.50 sen. At the same time, their cost of living is very much lower than in Sabah and Sarawak.”
Under the Malaya-controlled Federal Government, internal colonization has been the cruel fate of Sabah and Sarawak, belaboured Daniel. “Impoverished hordes are rushing into our states to marginalize and disenfranchise us and make us even poorer.”
Money, or rather the lack of it, is the key factor in the internal colonization of Sabah and Sarawak, explained Daniel.
He stressed that the Federal Government takes 95 per cent of oil and gas revenue in the inner waters of Sabah and Sarawak and 100 per cent of these resources in the outer waters.
“This is an illegal act as pointed out by the Sabah Law Association which has since declared that the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) is unconstitutional,” said Daniel. “If the PDA is unconstitutional, the so-called oil agreement between Sabah/Sarawak and Petronas does not exist.”
At the same, the party has discovered that almost all other revenue is being taken away by the Federal Government. “Last year, such revenue amounted to RM 40 billion,” said Daniel. “Those who are interested in the details can Google YouTube for Dr Jeffrey Kitingan’s speeches on the issue.”
Of the National Budget of almost RM 200 billion for this year, Daniel remains perplexed that Sabah and Sarawak have been allocated only “a measly RM 4 billion each”.
He does not know how much of this amount has been actually released to the two states.
Nevertheless, he finds it odd that Peninsular Malaysia is getting almost RM 192 billion although the 1963 Malaysia Agreement envisaged the all three territories in the Federation -- Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia -- would be equal partners.
To add insult to injury, goes on Daniel, Peninsular Malaysia-owned gaming, plantation and shipping companies in Sabah, as in Sarawak, are siphoning away billions every year from the state.
“The evil National Cabotage Policy (NCP) continues to enrich a handful of ship owners in Peninsular Malaysia who are linked to MCA and have the Ministry of Transport in the pocket,” he said. “It's these ship owners who are bankrolling the politics of MCA.”
He claims, based on pending cases in Court, that thousands of hectares of NCR land in Sabah, as in Sarawak, have been seized under one pretext or another by Peninsular Malaysia-owned companies.
“The result has been our people becoming landless and being pushed to join the urban poor in the squatter areas created by illegal immigrants,” said Daniel. “Here, they are caught in a vicious cycle of poverty, ignorance and disease.”
In the ultimate analysis, Daniel warns that the Federal Government has no choice but reverse its internal colonization polices in Sabah and Sarawak “or we would have no alternative but take up the matter with the United Nations Security Council”.
In addition, he wants the Federal Government to reimburse the Sabah and Sarawak Governments for the disproportionate revenue taken from the states since 1963. This reimbursement, supervised by the UN Security Council, can be spread out over 50 years but must carry compound interest of 8 per cent per annum until full and final settlement, he suggested.
“The restoration of Sabah and Sarawak to the pink of financial health is the key to resolving the grinding poverty of the two states brought about by internal colonization,” said Daniel. “Petronas must get out from Sabah and Sarawak and stay out.”
The Federal Government, he ventured further, must also comply with the Malaysia Agreement and ensure that Borneonisation is carried out as envisaged in the 20/18 Points and the Malaysia Agreement, the Inter Governmental Committee Report and the Cobbold Commission Report.
Malaysia must be brought back to its right premises as a two-tier Federation, summed up Daniel, “where Sabah and Sarawak have autonomy” with the Federal Government responsible for only defence, foreign affairs and economic planning but only when it comes to these two states.

Need we recite the history of the anti-Malaysia struggle in the Borneo colonies of the 1960s?

"We were actually forced to become part of Malaysia by the armed force of UK/Malayan armies in 1962. We were occupied by the Malayan army and re-colonized under the neo-colonial British Malaysia Plan in 1963!

“Malaysia” was first and foremost the re-cycled 1942 British Foreign Office “Malayan Union Plan”. This was to integrate the administration of the Malayan and Borneo colonies…to protect British interests in this S.E Asian region.

By the 1960s the threat of independence movements in Malaya and Northern Borneo forced the British to revive their old plan and they called it the “Malaysia Plan”. Tunku Abdul Rahman adopted this idea to annex Brunei Sabah and Sarawak with their rich resources when Malaya was near bankruptcy after the Korean wars. It also fulfilled UMNO’s dream of a “greater Malaysia”.

In brief- On Dec 8 1962 – the Brunei People's Party led the anti-Malaysia independence uprising for a united “North Kalimantan”. The British poured in over 60,000 armed forces with their navy and air force to suppress the uprising. In a matter of less than 8 months they hurriedly “formed” Malaysia. But Brunei was left out because of the Sultan’s wise decision not to become colonized by UMNO. In Sarawak the anti-Malaysia struggle developed into the independence armed resistance following the Brunei Uprising and this war was fought till 1990.

This is our proud history which very few talk about and is excluded from UMNO creative school text books.

Pakatan wants to “integrate” Sabah and Sarawak closer into the Malayan framework. It has the cheek to promise us 20% oil royalties when the bloody oil belongs to us since pre-history! This means they want to hang on to our oil & gas resources to finance the development of Malaya!

Think of the Sabah Sarawak Twin Towers- so-called Petronas (Patronage) Tower and PUTRID JAYA built by Mahathir with oil money stolen from us.

Do we Sarawakians and Sabahans want this plunder to go on when we can be fully independent and self-governing independent nations with all this wealth?

SABAH INDEPENDENCE DEBATE ON RAGES ON IN SABAH PARLIAMENT & COUNTRY WHILE WE SLEEP IN SARAWAK

The debate in Sarawak is about trees and dams- relevant – but without context. In Sabah, Sabahans see it in context of Malayan colonization of their country. This is a full blown debate which started some years ago and is gathering force- such that Sabah may become independent before Sarawak!

    6. DANIEL - FULLY SUPPORT YOUR VIEWS EXCEPT THAT FOR ALL THE EFFORT WHY CHOOSE TO REMAIN IN NEO-COLONIAL MALAYSIA?

"Autonomy" only means we continued to be ensnared in UK/UMNO neo-colonial Malaysia scheme of the 1960s...

This was the very idea of "Malaysia" to revive the 1942 British "Malayan Union Plan" for the unified administration of Malaya and the Borneo colonies [even before we became British colonies! We were "protectorates" before 1945. Sarawak was independent from 1842 to 1942].

The UMNO Malayans seized upon this idea to create their "greater Malaysia" by basically annexing Brunei Sabah and Sarawak. However, this was partly fulfilled when Brunei stayed out. The Brunei Sultan wisely elected for Brunei independence for reason of the Malayan rejection of the Sultan's demands to be treated equally (right to become "king") and the massive anti-Malaysia opposition seen in the 1962 Brunei Uprising. In 1990 the Malayans continued with their idea by secretly meeting AM Azahari and trying to convince him to take Brunei into "Malaysia". To his credit as real patriot he did not accept their evil scheme!

See this You Tube video (11 clips): http://youtu.be/jP71K2mdIXA

AM Azahari's counter proposal for independence to the British was to unify Brunei Sabah and Sarawak as "North Kalimantan". This would have been a far better idea and North Kalimantan would possibly have the chance to developed into a well rounded and rich state as oppose to impoverishment in Malaysia for Sabah and Sarawak.

Today we can see that Brunei and Spore are prospering as independent states despite their tiny size and Spore hardly had any resources.

So both Sabah and Sarawak are so rich and yet become the poorest territories of Malaysia.

The question is - what is the point of continuing to be poor countries in a neo-colonial arrangement- where we are still colonies ruled by a foreign government?

We have seen 48 years of "no chang" in Malaysia. A Sabahan famously declared that life was better before 1963- the year we got re-colonized!

East Timor and Southern Sudan got their independence and control their oil resources & even Brunei and Singapore are better off than us!

So why can't we in Sabah and Sarawak do it?

Full independence is what we want not autonomy!

  2. All Sabahans must ensure that these things will happen after GE13 and gain full autonomy. The Federal govt must repay what have been stolen from Sabah & Sarawak now the poorest states and backward comparing to Malaya..Get risk off colonization by Malaya. All Malaya based parties must leave Sabah & Sarawak as they have caused suffering to the people in the past decades under the evil umno/bn regime.

Looking around at all the other Asean nations, I was proud to call myself a Malaysian but after a while I always felt like a foreigner in my own country just because I am not one of them. Enough with the race and religion bullshit! What's with the bumiputra quota in regards to property. Only rich & connected bumi's gain. The poor stays poor. Are we not equals? Just take a look at the education system. We have to fork out thousands of ringgit to give our children a better education at the private schools because the current system just doesn't cut it. The DPM is out of touch with reality. Why must there be a minimum wage difference between East & West Malaysia? East Malaysians are already paying more for everything. Let PKR deal with BN/UMNO and the Mahathir gang. Let us Sabahans take back Sabah and pave way for a new nation. If Timor Leste can do it, so can we! The time is near. I implore all the political parties that claim to fight for the rights of Sabahans to forge our own united front. If you lead I will follow and so will the millions out there! We are shouting out for FREEDOM!

    1. NEW VISION FOR SABAH SARAWAK

"New Vision" you have seen the light -please see above comments on "We Want Full independence"!

Yes we can do it. East Timor and Southern Sudan have done it - and what more they control their own oil resources!

Independence is not a distant vision but one that is achievable if all of us in Sabah and Sarawak can unite and fight to regain this right to independence.

We actually lost our independence when our respective countries were annexed by Malayan in the wake of the 1962 Brunei Uprising.

We were re-colonized & Malayanized not "Borneonized" when they pretend to agree to our demands for self-government. Now we are governed from Kuala Lumpur! This is no differenr from being run from London! They are still plundering our resources to our great disadvantage of becoming the poorest colonies in Malaysia!

Why can't we be independent nations?

Just look at Brunei and Spore who actually stayed out of Malaysia- they are doing better than Sabah and Sarawak who continue to be chained to Malayan colonial rule!

FULL INDEPENDENCE FOR SABAH & SARAWAK!
