Sabah PWD deputy takes over as new Sabah Water Dept director

KOTA KINABALU - The Sabah government has appointed a new head for the state Water Department (SWD) amid a massive corruption investigation implicating top officials.

Willis @Mojiron Ansoi was promoted from being the deputy director of the Sabah Public Works Department (PWD) to interim director of the SWD, after the two top officials in the state utility agency were suspended over an RM3.3 billion graft probe by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission on October 5.

Willis’ transfer and new post takes effect from tomorrow, according to the statement signed by State Secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman.

Willis, 58, has an engineering degree from Universiti Malaya.

The suspended SWD director, deputy director, his “Datuk” brother, the Datuk’s accountant and the former deputy director of the department, were all arrested by the MACC and are currently out on bail pending completion of investigations.

The director and deputy director are alleged to have awarded federal projects given to the department to 38 proxy companies.

The MACC has arrested 24 people in connection with the SWD scandal that has seen over RM190 million seized.

Most recently, 19 district engineers were arrested yesterday for their suspected involvement in taking kickbacks from the contracts.

More than RM52 million in cash were seized from the director and his deputy, along with jewellery, luxury cars, land titles and foreign currency, and later, RM30 million in foreign bank accounts.

However, there have yet to be any charges in court.
