Abang Johari to be new Sarawak CM

KUCHING - Deputy Chief Minister 2 Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg looks set to be appointed the new Sarawak Chief Minister.

PBB senior vice-president Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said Abang Johari had the party's backing to take over from Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who passed away suddenly on Wednesday.

"We all support Abang Jo," Awang Tengah told reporters after leaving Governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud's residence at Demak Jaya here Friday.

Pressed to confirm that Abang Johari "will be the sixth chief minister," Awang Tengah said "to wait for the swearing-in ceremony."

"Our party PBB will support him. You will be notified when the swearing-in (ceremony) will take place," he added.

Senior PBB and state Barisan Nasional leaders met Taib this morning to discuss the succession.

Abang Johari, 66, is a nine-term assemblyman for Satok, most recently defending his seat against PKR's Mohammad Salleh Shawkatali in the 2016 state election.
