Two UMS students killed after car crashes into tree

KOTA KINABALU - Two Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students were killed in an accident after the car they were in smashed into tree along the city’s Likas coastal road during the wee hours of Sunday.

The two students are 23-year-old Mohd Haidil Amran from Sabah’s Kunak district, and 22-year-old Nur Azlina Tan Lian Chew from Tawau.

Kota Kinabalu acting police chief Supt George Abdul Rakman said the two died on the spot in the 2.41am accident after suffering multiple injuries, adding that initial investigations showed that Mohd Haidil had lost control of the car when he was overtaking another vehicle.

“We believe he lost control of the vehicle which hit into a road divider and smashed into a tree,” he said.

Supt George said firemen helped extricate the two victims from the mangled vehicle and a doctor at the scene confirmed that both were dead.

He said that they did not suspect the driver to be under the influence of alcohol.

Their bodies have been sent for a post-mortem at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the car would be sent to Puspakom for further investigations.

“We believe negligence is the cause of the accident. Our investigations are still in progress,” Supt George added.
